SPOKANE, Wash. – Five decades of former students will mark Joel E. Ferris High School’s 50th anniversary this weekend. Among those students will be Rick Riley, who was one of Ferris’ original students back in 1963.

In his three years at Ferris, Riley said everything was a “first” for his classmates and him. They voted on the school mascot, choosing the “Saxons” over the “Evergreens.”  His neighbor designed the school crest.

“It’s a great feeling to have been a part of that, but it’s also kind of humbling to see what we started in 1963 and what it’s evolved to in 2013,” Riley said.

Riley was a talented runner who became Ferris’ first state sports champion. A number of his records are still standing, including his two-mile time which has still never been run faster by anyone in the state of Washington.

Today Riley still resides in Spokane where he runs every day. He also runs a cross country school for elementary and middle school students and coaches cross country at St. George’s School.

Riley and other Ferris alumni are featured on a documentary called “Ferris Firsts: the story so far” produced by Ferris graduate Philip Sondericker. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, contact KDK One Digital Media at (509) 624-9400.
