SPOKANE -- Do you remember what you were doing one year ago? Chances are, you've chosen to forget it.
On December 17, 2008, snow began falling on the Inland Northwest, turning into one of the worst snowstorms of the decade in Eastern Washington, affectionately coined "Snowpocalypse" by local folks.
According to Chief Meteorologist Tom Sherry, within the 24-hour period on the 17th, about two feet of snow fell in Spokane.
Streets were a nightmare. Drivers couldn't get from Point A to Point B without getting stuck, getting hit by another driver, or getting in a crash themselves. That was the biggest reason that forced Spokane Public Schools to close, and it was the only time ever the Spokane Transit Authority has had to shut down.
As the afternoon got worse, businesses began to close up shop. People certainly weren't shopping, and employees just couldn't make it to work.
The day will live in infamy around the region for starting off the snowiest winter on record. Tom Sherry researched it -- he says within just the week following the 17th, about the same amount of snow that fell on Spokane is typical for an average winter around these parts.
We looked back through our KREM 2 News archives and were astounded by the video we shot that day. Thick, compact snow packed onto I-90. Plow drivers rushed as quickly as they could to clear major arterials around the city, only to turn around and find the same street in need of clearing again. And Good Samaritan after Good Samaritan helped their neighbors by lending shovels, snow blowers and digging out buried vehicles.
