SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. --  Washington State Patrol said one person is dead after a four vehicle crash on E. Trent Avenue and Sargent Wednesday evening. Authorities are looking into vehicular homicide charges against the driver that caused the accident.

Troopers said someone reported a black Jetta driving erratically and was hitting cars on north Sullivan.

Authorities said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and crossed over the center line and hit a Mazda in the eastbound lane of Trent. One witness said the driver was swerving and driving so fast that when the two cars hit both went airborne. A red Volvo traveling westbound was also involved. The driver of that vehicle is ok.

Washington State Patrol has identified the driver of the Jetta as Brett Birge, 43.

The driver of the Mazda, Brittany Babinski, 21, was taken to the hospital but died a short time later. Reports said Babinski was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Washington State Patrol is looking into whether Birge was impaired with drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. Birge was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

All lanes at the intersection were reopened almost 4 hours after the crash.

Collision investigation detectives were on the scene trying to figure out how the crash happened.
