SPOKANE, Wash. – Customers will still find the same European products on the shelves and meat and cheeses in the cases at the Alpine Deli, but they will see four new faces: the Hatkic family.
They are the new owners at the Alpine deli, but they hope to keep the business’ old customers and the existing reputation. They also kept four of the five staff members.
The Hatkic family decided to discontinue beer and wine sales at the Alpine Deli in exchange for a larger dining area where they are serving up scratch-made pastries and new lunch specials like jagerschnitzel, wienerschnitzel and a Bosnian pita cevapi.
“They’re loving my mom’s baking and the food,” Adnan Hatkic said. “The food is selling well.”
Adnan’s mother, Esma Hatkic, was a talented chef at a popular restaurant in Germany after she and her family fled their home country of Bosnia when the Bosnian War broke out. They’ve lived in Spokane more than 15 years. Adnan was persistent that his mother pursue her dream of owning her own business and the Alpine Deli was the perfect fit.
Previous owner, Werner Gaubinger, has spent the first couple weeks of his retirement helping with the transition. He made sure Adnan Hatkic will have all the contacts he needs to order the same products.
“We actually called every single supplier,” Adnan Hatkic said. “I spoke with them for a little bit and established relationships with them.”
Gaubinger now begins his new role at the Alpine Deli as a customer, and a friend, as the tradition continues in new hands.
“We are delighted that our small business has, in a way, bloomed again,” Gaubinger said. “It’s going to be exciting for us.”
The Hatkic family retained four of the five employees. They eventually want to expand the business to include event catering.
