NORTH IDAHO--Some people are calling a North Idaho man a hero after he helped save two homeowners from a fire.

The man spotted the fire on his way to work and sprung into action.

Rex Yates was driving to work near Spirit Lake Monday morning when he noticed something out of the ordinary.

"Oh, you could see big flames coming out the back of the building,” said Yates.

He said it looked like the fire was coming from a detached garage.

"Well, I called 911 and then I told 911 hey I’m going up there to see if I can help in case somebody's in that building,” said Yates.

The detached garage was fully engulfed in flames and was located just a few feet from a house.

"After hammering real hard on the windows and doors I got the people to wake up and they realized immediately upon looking outside that their garage was on fire,” said Yates.

The people were able to get out safe and got a good distance away from the fire. The Fire Department was able to arrive before the flames spread to the house.

"If no one had called the fire department, everything would have went and if nobody stopped to help. Yeah, it could have killed them. And burned everything down,” said Yates.

The owner of the garage said he makes custom cabinets and inside the garage was his workshop. He said he had lost everything but thanks Yates for what he did.
