SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A mother and her two young children were able to get out of their burning Spokane Valley duplex Tuesday morning.
The fire started at a duplex around 5:45 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Robinhood St.
Firefighters say the woman woke up and saw smoke in her room, ran and grabbed her two children and got out of the house. The children's father had already left for work.
The people living in the other half of the duplex are relatives. Both families escaped without injury.
Firefighters believe the fire was started by a faulty light fixture in the basement. The home had only one smoke detector and it was not working.
The Red Cross is assisting both families with a place to stay.
