SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A huge crowd gathered at Central Valley High School Saturday afternoon to remember a recent graduate who drowned in the Spokane River.
Rescuers recovered the body of Jansen Badinger, 18, Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses said he and his girlfriend were trying to swim across the river when Badinger disappeared under the water.
Family and friends organized a special memorial service for Jansen at the Central Valley High School gym. Hundreds pack the gym to remember Jansen's life.
The service featured a few speakers. Cecil Jackson, the founder of a local sports camp, knew Jansen for years. He talked about the difference he made in the lives of younger kids.
"I challenge you to be great. I challenge you to go out and get involved in the community," said Jackson.
Badinger recently graduated from Central Valley High. Earlier in the week, the school provided grief counseling for Central Valley High students.
An account was opened at Spokane Teacher’s Credit Union for donations to help pay for Badinger's funeral service. The donations can be made and any STCU Branch to the "Jansen Badinger Memorial Fund.”
