SPOKANE--One business is expanding the services it provides in Spokane to try to encourage more entrepreneurship and job growth.
McKinstry came to Spokane ten years ago. Last year, the business moved into the 800 block of East Spokane Falls Blvd., bringing 100 new jobs to the area. October 1st, it celebrated its new innovation center, which will help other businesses contribute to the local economy.
The Seattle-based company helps businesses design, construct and build efficient workspaces. Now they're adding a place to help others grow and build the economy.
There are already five companies in the building and spaces to allow students and organizations to come together. The center hopes to encourage collaboration on products and services within the technology field. It also hopes to be a center connecting the academic institutions of Spokane.
The focus on science and math based careers or STEM, is one leaders from local colleges discussed at the event. Leaders of the company and educators believe they have to reach out to local school districts, by helping them better prepare their students for college and find them work in a growing business environment.
Company leaders say what makes the center unique is that it is ready to go, because McKinstry came to this location a year ago and has a facility in place to start helping the community.
