ELK, Wash. -- Authorities are investigating how a man fried two electrical transformers during a huge marijuana growing operation.

Court documents indicate a man named “Sasha” had nearly 100 marijuana plants inside a shop nestled in the 43000 block of N. Newport Highway in Elk.

Officials said “Sasha” was stealing power from a local power company for the grow operation.

Last week crews with Inland Power and light responded to a downed transformer. They replaced it, and two hours later, that transformer also blew.

Detectives said the suspect had dug up underground power lines and illegally tapped into the, knocking out power to the area.

“I think using the word ‘stupid’ would be an understatement,” said Deputy Craig Chamberlin, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the suspect is in custody in other charges, but charges in this case will be filed soon.
