COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho-- Police officers are looking for a male suspect who approached a 13-year-old girl while she was checking her mail.

Cionnay Swope said she was walking out to her neighborhood mailboxes Wednesday afternoon when a white, older, utility van pulled up and stopped near her on the street.

“I was like, ‘okay, whatever, it's probably just me being paranoid,’” Cionnay said.  “Then I turned around again.  When I kept turning around he kept stopping.  It was kind of like, okay, something's going on.”

Cionnay decided to leave the mailboxes and head back home.

"Then [the car] made a u-turn and came back around and kind of parked at the side," said Cionnay.  “That's when I turned around and he got out of his car and started running towards me.”

Cionnay ran to her house and the man ran after her, she said.  The girl’s mother heard Cionnay beating on the back door and let her into the house.  Cionnay’s mother said she did not see the man leave or get a look at the van.

“I'm just proud of her that she went with her gut and she ran,” said Jennifer Swope.

The girl said the van has dark windows and a curtain behind the front seats. Coeur d’Alene Police Officers are searching the area of the 7700 block of Joanna Drive.  The suspect was described as a 5’10” Hispanic male.

Anyone with any information on this case is asked to call the police Department at 208-769-2320.
