SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- An 84-year-old man is in stable condition after a trench he was working in collapsed on him in the Spokane Valley.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department says the man was installing a residential sewer line on the 10900 block of East Empire Avenue when the trenchcaved in and buried him up to his chest.
Officials say the man's daughter got in the trench and started digging with her hands to free dirt from around the man's chest so he could breath and called 911.
Resucers shored up the sides of the trench and dug the man out using hand tools. They were able to get the man out in less than an hour.
The man was transported to a local trauma center. He doesn't appear to have any serious injuries.
