SPOKANE VALLEY -- The Washington State Patrol and Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating a deadly officer involved shooting that happened late Wednesday night in Spokane Valley.

This happened in the 14,000 block of East Fourth Avenue at the Plant Farm with Country Charm, a local nursery.

Spokane Police say a Spokane Valley Police officer was responding to a request for increased patroling because of recent prowling in the area.

They say that officer was approached by a man, there was a confrontation and shots were fired. Police confirm the man was killed. They identify him as Wayne Scott Creach, 74.

KREM 2 News spoke with Creach's son, Allen Creach, who told us his father was a pastor at Greenacres Baptist Church for 40 years. Allen told us his father got out of bed responding to what he thought was a burglar and took a gun with him. He told us his mother heard a shout and shots fired outside from the bedroom. The Creach's ask for the community's support in prayer.

Since a Spokane Valley Police officer was involved in this shooting, other agencies are investigating.

KREM 2 news previously interviewed Creach in May, 2001 regarding caring for plants in spring weather.

We'll continue to update this story here on KREM.com and on KREM 2 News.
