SPOKANE, Wash. -- A man was killed during a shootout outside of a Spokane hotel.
It happened around 4:00 a.m. Thursday in the Days Inn parking lot on West 3rd Avenue.
Witnesses called police after hearing gunshots in the area. Officers arrived to find the victim, a 34-year-old black man, in the parking lot. Medics treated the man for about 45 minutes before pronouncing him dead.
Police found a handgun about 15 feet away from the body. They do not yet know who the gun belongs to.
Major Crimes detectives were called to investigate. They hoped to gather more information from the hotel’s surveillance cameras, but the cameras cover little of the parking lot.
Police blocked off three rooms at the Days Inn as they waited for a search warrant. They also took a red scooter away from the crime scene as evidence. Wednesday, police say a man on a red scooter opened fired at people on Spokane’s South Hill. Detectives are working to determine if these incidents are related.
Lt. Joe Walker says police have a good idea of who the shooter is but are not releasing that information right now. Police also are trying to confirm preliminary information they've gathered about the suspect's vehicle.
Walker says two different cars left the hotel and "a few people definitely took off." Police have not found any eyewitnesses, and an arrest has yet to be made.
Authorities have not released the victim’s identity. The man is not from the Spokane area, according to the Associated Press.
