SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A man suspected of car prowling in Spokane Valley early Tuesday assaulted himself as Spokane Valley Sheriff’s deputies put him under arrest.
Deputies said a witness called authorities around 2:30 a.m. after spotting Timothy Nelson, 35, inside of his car on the 9800 block of East 4th Avenue. The complainant said when he confronted Nelson he said he was looking for cigarettes.
Once in the area, deputies spotted Nelson near 7th and Dishman Mica. When they made contact, the deputies said it was obvious Nelson was intoxicated. They noticed he had both fists clenched as if he were holding onto something, according to deputies.
When asked to show his hands, the deputies said Nelson refused and appeared to be looking for an escape route. Due to Nelson matching the description the complainant provided, the deputies grabbed his wrists and got him to the ground. During the arrest, deputies said Nelson tried to pull away, refused to follow orders, and said “I don’t want to go to jail.”
Once in handcuffs, deputies said Nelson yelled something similar to “all you cops do is grind people’s faces in the pavement.” They watched him start to scrape his face from side to side on the sidewalk, self inflicting a small laceration on his forehead.
Nelson was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the charges of Obstructing and Resisting Arrest. He was also booked on an outstanding warrant for Vehicle Prowling.
