SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Spokane Marine who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom on January 1 will be honored Monday, January 13.
Sergeant Jacob Hess was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 26, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The memorial will be held at Life Center Foursquare Church at 1:00 p.m. Monday. The service will be open to the public.
The family has asked the media not to attend the event.
Spokane Mayor David Condon has also declared Monday Jacob M. Hess Day. A full proclamation was read at Monday's City Council meeting.
Military Representatives said Hess had earned numerous medals and honors over his short career. They include the Global War on Terrorism and National Defense Service Medals. He also earned a Good Conduct Medal.
There are two more honors that were in the process of being approved and will now be awarded posthumously. Those include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
