LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) -- Authorities in Lewiston are getting ready to crack down on people seeking to set off illegal fireworks.
The city is stepping up efforts to confiscate illegal fireworks and imposing stiffer penalties for being in possession of the illegal products.
Under new rules, The Lewiston Tribune reports that anyone caught with illegal fireworks can face fines up to $300 and up to six months in the county jail.
The city has also launched an education campaign -- including advertising on billboards -- about the new rules and dangers of illegal pyrotechnics.Lewiston Police Chief Steven Orr says it's about changing the culture and letting people know what is acceptable.
City officials imposed the tougher penalties and enforcement after fireworks were blamed for a fire at a church last year.
