SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash.—Searchers in Alaska recovered the body of a 17-year-old from Nine Mile Falls on Tuesday.
Officials said Casey Burt was on a commercial fishing boat when it capsized on June 22, 2014. Burt attended Lakeside High School and was on the soccer team there. Those who knew Burt said he was also involved with the local Young Life chapter.
Alaska State Troopers located and recovered Burt’s body on Tuesday. Troopers said his body was located approximately half of a mile upriver from where the skiff originally overturned.
Troopers said three of the four occupants were found when the boat overturned. One of those three found was dead and identified as 38-year-old Charles Anthony Voss. Burt was missing.
Troopers said that preliminary investigation showed that the winds in the area were estimated at 25 MPH and the waves were estimated at four-feet when the ship overturned. Earnest Pierce, 47, of Nine Mile Falls, WA and Brandon Michael Park, 24, of West Richland, WA were able to climb on top of the overturned skiff until rescued by other fishing boats, according to troopers.
Troopers said none of the occupants were wearing personal floation devices at the time of the incident.
Burt left behind a younger sister, parents and several extended family members. Lakeside High School was set to open on Thursday for students to come and write condolences to Burt's family. School counselors were set to be there.
Burt’s body was being transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage.
