SPOKANE, Wash. -- A jury decided the fate of an accused killed Thursday in Spokane.

A jury found Louis (Hanson) Montoya guilty of 1st Degree Murder of shooting and killing Aaron Cummings on New Year’s Eve in 2012.  Authorities said the shooting was gang related.

In opening statements Monday, the defense for Hanson claimed the shooting was self-defense. They also said that “neither men involved were angels.”

Cumming’s mother testified about the last minutes of his life. Witnesses said Cummings never reached for a weapon.

Montoya’s defense wanted to push back his sentence so he could get married before he went to prison.

On his way out of court, it appeared that Montoya made a shooting motion toward the victim's family.  Detectives escorted the victim's family out of court.
