SEASIDE -- A wildfire Sunday trapped about 19 hikers on the popular Saddle Mountain trail in the Coast Range.
The Coast Guard flew to the scene and helped ground crews evacuate hikers. The trail was expected to remain closed Monday morning.
The fire was about an acre Sunday afternoon, but on very steep terrain, said Jeff Golightly of the Lewis & Clark Rural Fire Protection District. Crews were hauling water by ATV or backpack to reach the flames.
"It's something you never expect to see while you're hiking, white smoke coming down from below," Becky Tarker told KGW. She and a friend were hiking the Clatstop County trail for the first time.
"It really was right on the trail," she said of the flames, "And it was getting really hot."
She said flames were just past arm's length along the trail. The pair ran down to the trailhead, she said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation. There was no lightning in the area Sunday, he said.
