SPOKANE -- Spokane Police recovered a handgun stolen out of the patrol of a Cheney Police Officer.

On August 12, the off-duty officer was putting his gear in his patrol car, which was parked inside the garage of his home. While the officer was in his backyard, he saw a man grab a bag containing his Glock 22.40 caliber handgun out of his car and run down the street.

Spokane Police tracked down the suspect vehicle. Officers said they found a credit card belonging to David R. Kerney and a .40 caliber round inside the center console.

Investigators later received information that Kerney had traded the police handgun for methamphetamine.

Kerney was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail.

Police recovered the stolen gun early Wednesday morning.
