EPHRATA, Wash. -- An inmate at Grant County Jail was seriously hurt on Monday when she fell while possibly trying to hang herself according to authorities.
Officials said Tina I. Mandelas, 47, of Moses Lake, fell about 20 feet from a second tier balcony inside the jail around 3:20 p.m. on September 30. Surveillance video showed Mandelas take a jail-issued jumpsuit from an inmate's bed and tie one end to the railing on the tier according to officials. Authorities said another inmate noticed what she was doing and rushed to stop her.
Officials said the video showed Mandelas seemed to throw herself off of the rail and fall to the concrete floor below.
Jail staff treated her and she was later flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she had surgery Tuesday morning. The extent of her injuries is unknown.
