ISTANBUL, Turkey – A Gonzaga University professor has given two of his journalism students what he calls the “Best Homework Assignment Ever” by taking them through Slovenia and Turkey to teach digital storytelling to foreign journalists and students.
Professor Dan Garrity is accompanying students Matt Wintheiser and Levi Holmes on this special summer project conducted through Gonzaga.
Garrity is having his students post video blogs on their teachings and adventures in what he calls their “online digital media lab.”
In one of Garrity’s own blogs before the trip began last week, he stated “we’re trying to prove that entertainment programming can be positive, educational, and live up to the Gonzaga mission at the same time.”
He said the students are sharing their knowledge of digital storytelling with foreign students, while also learning themselves the challenges that face foreign journalists with no real news gathering budgets. Garrity said that part of the lesson is that everyone should have a voice, no matter the cost and his students are helping to teach the necessary skills to journalists who don’t have them.
The students started their tutorials in Slovenia May 15th and moved to Istanbul, Turkey today. In Turkey they’re meeting up with two college students and their professor and conducting a four day session on producing video assignments.
