SPOKANE, Wash. -- “Spokane Gives Week” kicked off Saturday.

Spokane Gives Week is a celebration of volunteerism backed by the city, United Way and a collection of sponsors and community service organizations.

The effort got underway at 8 a.m. with “Cleaning From the Core.” Volunteers planned to sweep downtown sidewalks, clear debris from flower beds to prep them for planting, pick up garbage, cover graffiti and get the city ready to host the upcoming festivals, events and activities.

Among other volunteer efforts Saturday, a group of students from the Gonzaga University business fraternity helped Catholic Charities’ Spokane Furniture Bank, located just south of GU’s campus on Trent and Hamilton.

Spokane Gives Week was scheduled for April 12-19. Volunteers can sign up online to take part in the Youth Center project or a variety of others on the Spokane Gives website.
