SPOKANE -- A social media campaign is underway to help a Cheney man who is dying from cancer to meet his idol LeBron James.

Joey Cawyer is battling Stage 4 brain cancer.

His family said his cancer treatments and radiation have worn his body out, and his health is at a crossroads.

Joey’s family said the Cheney High School grad has followed James since the beginning of his career. They said the one thing Joey always wanted to do is see LeBron play in person.

To celebrate Joey’s 23rd birthday, he and his family are traveling to Portland to attend the Trailblazers/Miami Heat game Thursday night.

His group already has tickets to the game, but they want desperately for Joey to be able to meet his idol in person.

Joey’s friends started a Twitter & Facebook campaign, hoping that if enough people talk about Joey’s wish, that LeBron or someone in the franchise will help make it happen.

Supporters are using #meetjoey in their tweets. Many are tweeting James directly -- @kingjames-- telling him about Joey’s desire to meet him.

Joey’s friends also posted a message on the KREM 2 Facebook wall. Within an hour, the post had more than 100 likes.
