SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Investigators are working to determine what sparked a fire that engulfed two Spokane Valley businesses.
Neighbors called firefighters after seeing smoke billow around The Handle Bar & Hell Yeah Cycles in the 17000 block of East Appleway around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The fire started in the building’s basement and worked its way up to the attic, according to the fire department.
A floor partially collapsed as firefighters tackled the flames, but none of them were injured.
The exact cause has yet to be determined.
The fire department says the businesses have been renovated several times. The resulting void spaces allowed the flames to quickly tear through the building, making this fire particularly difficult for crews. Firefighters say they even found a skeleton of structure within the exterior building. Logs made up the original businesses, which were built over and added to over time.
Nearby power lines were also cause for concern. Avista shut off power before the fire could spread to them.
The building suffered significant damaged, but crews did save several Harley Davidson motorcycles along with some other property. The fire department estimates the loss to total $75,000.
