SPOKANE, Wash.— Work starts on the $6.8 million Deaconess Hospital renovation on Thursday in Spokane.

Demolition began April 1st and the first phase of construction on the hospital’s Emergency Room was already complete in May.  Hospital leaders planned to give tours of the expanded west side of the facility after the ceremony.

Leaders at Deaconess anticipated $6.8 million would cover renovation of the existing Emergency Department, including a 2,512 ft. expansion and a new canopy over the entrance of the facility. They expected the construction would be completed in the three phases and finished by the spring of 2015.

The plans included all private rooms, a new waiting room, Emergency Medical Service room and new nurses stations. Additional features included new heating, ventilation, air conditioning and LED lighting.

Hospital officials said the emergency room took in more than 30,000 visitors each year. The Level III Trauma Center is the only Chest Pain Center certified by Cardiovascular Patient Care and one of only two Senior-Friendly Emergency rooms in the area according to leaders at Deaconess Hospital.
