SPOKANE, Wash. -- Firefighters doused a smoldering pile of garbage Thursday morning after a garbage truck driver said he noticed smoke coming from a dumpster-load of trash he had just picked up.

Fire crews were called to an area near E. Dalke Avenue and N. Division Street.  The garbage truck driver emptied the smoldering load of trash onto the road and called 911.

Firefighters doused the pile of garbage with retardant.  There were no flames coming from the load.  Crews also had to spread the garbage out all over the street to make sure there were no hot spots remaining.

Dalke Ave was blocked in the area while crews cleaned up.  Division Street, however, remained open.
