COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) -- A federal jury says a northern Idaho sheriff's deputy was justified in using force against a Bonner County man during a drunken driving arrest.
The Coeur d'Alene Press reports that the jury ruled in favor of Deputy Clinton Mattingley. The sheriff's department and Mattingley were sued by 62-year-old Joel Petty, who contended that the deputy violated Petty's civil rights in 2008 when he handcuffed Petty's hands behind his back despite Petty telling him that he had shoulder problems. Petty said the deputy caused him to sustain a shoulder rotator cuff injury.
The seven-member jury rejected Petty's claims on Friday.
