PATEROS, Wash.-- A young man was rushed into surgery late Tuesday after his father reportedly shot him during a heated argument in Pateros.
Okanogan County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Derik R. Darlington, 50, for shooting his 22-year-old son, Weldon Darlington.
Investigators said the two had gotten into a verbal argument just after 6:30 p.m. near 180 Ives Street that turned into a physical altercation. At some point, the two separated and Derik pulled a out a 44 caliber handgun.
Weldon told his father to go ahead and shoot him so Derik pulled the trigger, according to authorities. The bullet struck Weldon in the stomach and exited through his side then went through his arm. Weldon then walked to his grandparents’ house and called 911 to report the shooting.
Deputies arrested Derik Darlington at the residence without incident and booked him into the Okanogan County Jail on Assault I.
An unknown person drove Weldon to the Brewster hospital and dropped him off. Medics transported him to Central Hospital in Wenatchee to undergo surgery. His condition was not released but family members said he was expected to survive.
