SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -- A woman and child are safe after their boat sank in Horseshoe Lake Thursday afternoon. They were found early Friday morning.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, a couple and the man's 2-year-old child swam to shore after the boat sank. The dad hiked out to get help around midnight, authorities said.

A ground search was launched for the family. A helicopter was also brought in later.

Rescuers found the three around 3:30 a.m. with the help of the helicopter's heat sensors, which located the woman and child. Officials said they were all okay, but were not dressed for the windy, wet weather.

It was not immediately clear what caused the boat to sink.

The pilots flying air one in these situations are all volunteers.
