SPOKANE, Wash. -- A family friend of the man who was tased outside of Oz Fitness said the man's father saw him get tased.
Family friend, Karen Unger, said William Berger had just closed on a house in the area and his father was in town to help. Berger's father had dropped him off at Oz Fitness and when he returned to pick him up he witnessed him being tased.
The Medical Examiner said Berger is brain dead and still in the hospital.
Brain death refers to the irreversible end of brain activity. It differs from "clinical death" which is when blood stops circulating and breathing stops.
Witnesses said a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputy tased the man, believed to be Berger, around 7:00 p.m. outside of the gym. Investigators said the man became unresponsive as deputies struggled to arrest him. Deputies and EMS provided life saving measures according to deputies.
Authorities on the scene also received medical treatment.
Witnesses said the man who was tased became belligerent inside of the gym. He was allegedly lifting weights when he dropped one. He yelled at the weight, started punching equipment, and punched a hole in the wall according to Oz Fitness members. They said the man even threw a towel dispenser and cursed at other customers.
The Berger family attorney said it is too soon to say if the family will sue.
