FRUITLAND, Wash. -- An Eastern Washington family is devastated after their home was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning.

The seven family members were not at home at the time. They were at a hospital staying with one of their daughters who is battling cancer.

The James family was getting ready to bring home their 14-year-old daughter Brianna. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and was receiving treatment at Sacred Heart. Just when things were starting to look up, the family’s house burnt down.

The family had decided to stay the night at a hotel in Spokane. The house is a total loss. The family’s two dogs and three cats also died in the fire.

They are still not sure how it started.

“We left one heater on in our bathroom, to keep the pipes warm. So that way we didn’t have any bursting pipes or anything. Just in awe, you know,” said Heather James.

The family plans to rebuild their home. Family friends have set up a rental home for them to live in for the time being.
