SPOKANE, Wash.--Spokane County Jail officers moved a local murder suspect to a cell by himself recently for his own safety. Guards said Issiah Schuman, 19, was beat up by fellow inmates.
Schuman is accused of shooting and killing Fabian McBride in June 2013 in Spokane County. The deadly drive-by happened in the middle of the afternoon near Atlantic and Wedgewood
Authorities have suspected both Issiah Shauman and Fabian McBride had gang ties to the same gang. McBride’s family said the two men were close.
Shauman had been living with McBride in the days leading up to the shooting according to friends. Court documents said the motive came down to a break in where the two men were living. The victim’s family said Shauman had an anger problem and could easily snap.
Shauman was only in the Spokane County Jail for a few weeks when he was beat up. His injuries were not serious. However, guards said he was moved to a different wing into a cell by himself to avoid future problems.
Officials could not elaborate further to protect Shauman’s privacy.
All inmates are immediately classified when they are booked to prevent beatings like this according to guards. Inmates with the same classification are put together. Officials said it is up to inmates to be honest about any conflicts they have on the outside to be classified properly.
Jail staff said fights like the one involving Shauman are rare. He will likely be in a different wing of the jail for the duration of his time at the Spokane County Jail according to workers.
