SPOKANE, Wash. -- A fire burned through the basement of a home in North Spokane late Monday, but firefighters are credited with saving the home from being destroyed.

It happened just after 11 p.m. 800 block of West Spofford.

Firefighters knocked down the flames in just 20 minutes then started searching all three floors to check for any residents.

All five people and three dogs all managed to escape without any major issues.  However, due to heavy smoke damage in the home, they were not able to stay.

The family planned to stay with relatives until the house was repaired.  Avista shut off the electrical and natural gas in the meantime.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
