A photo of a man helping to ease his elderly dog’s pain by floating him in Lake Superior became an internet sensation a year ago, and word has just come that "Schoep" has died at age 20.

When John Unger of Bayfield, Wisconsin learned that Schoep, a shepherd mix, had severe arthritis and would not live long, he was determined to alleviate his best friend's pain. He would take Schoep into the lake and hold the dog to comfort him.

Photographer Hannah Hudson's touching photo of the two went viral last August.

On Thursday, Unger broke the news of Schoep's passing on Facebook.

"I breathe but I can't catch my breath," he said.

"Schoep passed yesterday"

"More info in the days ahead."
