SPOKANE, Wash. -- Prostitution has been a problem in Spokane County for years, but neighbors living in hot spots are fed up. Along with prostitution, people living and working along Sprague Avenue said it is a prime location for gangs and drugs too.
Viewers contacted KREM 2 News in hopes of finding out why police are not cracking down on crime, and prostitutes in particular, in that area.
Authorities said deputies are still tracking crime in the area. However, instead of patrolling the area in cars, investigators are doing it online. Investigators said there are still women who get clients on the streets but most are going online to meet johns.
Officials admit while there are more serious crimes that take priority, prostitution is not being overlooked.
“We are very actively patrolling this. Just because you don't see us looking for them, doesn’t mean we aren't,” said Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Craig Chamberlain.
Authorities warn anyone using the internet to solicit prostitution could be met with a deputy on the other end.
