SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane County Sheriff's Office identified two deputies involved in a deadly incident at Oz Fitness last Thursday.
Authorities said deputies Shawn Audie and Steve Paynter were the two that responded to the disorderly person call around 7 p.m. at Oz Fitness located at 5501 S. Regal Street.
Witnesses said William Berger, 34, became belligerent inside of the gym. He was allegedly lifting weights when he dropped one. He yelled at the weight, started punching equipment, and punched a hole in the wall according to Oz Fitness members. They said the man even threw a towel dispenser and cursed at other customers.
Authorities were called and eventually tased Berger outside of the gym.
Investigators said the man became unresponsive as deputies struggled to arrest him. Deputies and EMS tried providing life saving measures according to deputies at the scene.
Berger was removed from life support over the weekend according to his family’s attorney.
Deputy Shawn Audie has been employed with the Sheriff's Office for twelve years. He is a Field Training Officer as well as a Defensive Tactics Instructor. Deputy Audie has received twelve letters of commendation during his twelve years with the Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Steve Paynter has been employed with the Sheriff's Office for thirteen years and was previously a Field Training Officer. Deputy Paynter has received eleven letters of commendation during his thirteen years with the Sheriff's Office.
