SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Department of Veterans Affairs announces today a grant for more than $1 million to help veterans' families in the area.
This grant will go to the Goodwill. Goodwill said it's the first time the money has come to Spokane.
Around 1,400 veterans are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in Spokane County. The $1.3 million dollars will help 325 veterans support their families by finding a place to live and look for jobs.
"It's very hard for them to get back on their feet so a lot of times they're either operating out of missions or going to transitional housing, which can be stressful in itself," said Goodwill employee Dave Williams.
Goodwill will oversee services for helping veterans find work and manage their money. They will have training, classes and transportation when they need it.
Goodwill will have some time to plan how they'll spend the money before they receive the grant later this year.
