GRANT COUNTY, Wash. -- A Level 1 evacuation was lifted around 11:30 for the communities of Beverly, Shawanna and Wannapum Village in Grant County.
The warning was due to the Saddle Mountain wildfire burning in Kittitas County across the Columbia River and high winds. The fire threat is now gone.
Fire resources in Grant County near Beverly spent much of the night getting ready to battle the fire near an abandoned railroad trestle that connects Grant and Kittitas counties.Officials said the fire had burned the Kittitas shoreline and ignited the trestle. They said the wind kept the fire from burning across the river.
Grant County Fire District 10 and the US Department of Fish and Wildlife firefighters were set up to extinguish the fire if winds send it over the river.
A Level 1 evacuation is a precaution to people living in the area.
Officials closed State Route 243 between Route 26 and Mattawa because of smoke from that fire.
The Grant County Sheriff also wanted to remind the public not to call 911 for information on the fire or evacuations. They said the Grant County Emergency Telephone Notification System would send out warnings to affected areas.
