SPOKANE, Wash.--Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers will give the Republican response to the president’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night. KREM 2 News will carry the address live at 6:00 p.m.

Representative McMorris Rodgers is only the third person from Washington State to take on the response to a State of the Union address. She is the first woman to speak after a democratic president since 2000.

McMorris Rodgers will reach a large National audience during the address. There are risks with giving the response to the State of the Union.

"It's a great chance to increase some name recognition but it's also a chance where any little slip up could really kind of be magnified,” said Whitworth University Professor Anthony Rodin.

The representative will be added to only a handful of politicians from either party representing Washington State in the State of the Union response. Experts said her home state has little to do with the GOP choosing her.

"I think it has less to do with geography and more to do with the fact that she is a woman,” said Rodin.

Many political analysts have said the Republican party picked McMorris Rodgers because they want to have a stronger connection with women voters. It is part of a trend of politicians that the GOP has picked in recent years.

"It was very calculated by the party, it has very much been a string of different minorities,” said Rodin.

It is not all about voter groups and the congresswoman. It could also highlight that Washington has more to it than the blue state reputation many people associate with it.

"It's a good chance for Eastern Washington, the conservative voters out here in Eastern Washington, there's more to Washington than just the west side,” said Rodin.

McMorris Rodgers is the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House of Representatives and the mother of three young children.
