SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Spokane auto shop owner says he’s frustrated because of repeat offenders targeting his store.

Burglars are breaking into cars on the Stanley’s Service Center lot to steal anything they can. The owner says even though he’s told police, there isn’t much that can be done to stop it.

Dave Webb says he’s always been a victim of crime, but the situation has grown worse over the last six months. He began trying to stop thieves himself to combat the trend, but says his efforts have been futile.

“In my opinion, it’s kind of a waste of time to even try to prevent it,” he said.

Webb added security cameras, and police even responded during a few of the break-ins, but it did little good.

“I had an officer come out, but they basically said if you don’t catch them red handed, their hands are tied.”

Webb says nothing of significant value has been stolen from the cars, but he calls it all absolute destruction.

The owner plans to add more cameras to try to see the face of the burglar in the future. He also plans to ask the city’s permission to build a secure parking area on his property.

“I believe they’re overwhelmed, I truly do, with this much crime. Even at my own house I’ve been broken in to.”

Spokane police say it’s important for any case of property crimes to be reported. If they see a significant number of cases in one sport, it’s considered a pattern and gets more attention.
