SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash-- Broadway Elementary School held an assembly Wednesday morning that featured NASA Astronaut Stanley Love.

The school applied to have the astronaut speak in the fall of 2013 and was excited to learn the request was granted.

After the assembly, Love visited fourth and fifth grade classrooms.

The Parent Teacher Organization funded the visit along with donations from students collected through the “Love for Astronaut Love Coin Drive.”

The school principal, Lori Johnson, said she hoped the visit would help inspire students.

“Having an astronaut visit your school exposes students to possibilities that they would not ordinarily get to experience in Spokane.” Johnson said. “Even if they don’t want to become an astronaut, seeing someone who worked hard in school and achieved something remarkable is an inspiration to students with any aspiration.”

Teachers prepared students for the visit through books, reading, writing and exploring the science of outer space.
