SPOKANE, Wash. -- For the first time in the history of the Spokane Police Department, an explosive detection K9 will join the ranks.

The new K9 unit will assist with calls such as suspicious devices, unattended packages, and safety sweeps during large-scale events like parades and sporting events.

Ofc. Pegram and K9 Ryker are certified in explosives detection.  The pair completed training in December at the Washington State Patrol Academy.  They trained for more than 500 hours over 13 weeks and Ryker is certified in identifying more than 20 explosive odors.  Some of the odors Ryker can detect include gunpowder and ammunition.

The day after graduation from the academy, Ryker assisted detectives searching for evidence at the scene of a homicide on S. Garfield Street.

Ofc. Pegram has been a Certified Bomb Technician with the Spokane Police Department for five years.
