SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Spokane Fire Department officials said freezing fog contributed to a bicyclist being run over by a car early Monday morning.

It happened around 6: 22 a.m. near Union and Fancher just south of the Spokane River.

The man on the bicycle was riding on Union approaching the Fancher intersection, but the car did not see the bicycle because of the fog.  The bicyclist tried to stop on the road covered by frozen fog, but laid the bike down and skidded on the frozen ground into the path of the car that then ran over the man's leg.

He was taken to the hospital by an ambulance with a broken leg.

The guy on the bike needed to have flashers on or lights, they are hard to see. I hope he learned something from this and recovers quickly.

Probaly the man on the bike wasn't wearing bright colored clothing so he can be seen and riding a bike in fog is rather stupid.

Why would anyone ride around on a bike at 6 in the morning, before sunup, in dense frozen fog, on icy streets?? We are certainly not dealing with a genius here.

I wish these news reporters would get the whole story before publishing it. In the article it makes it sound like it was the person driving didn't see the guy on the bike, but perhaps it was the guy on the bike that slid on the icy street and lost control of his bike and fell into the street.

This guy probably didn't have a license to drive like some so he probably was riding to work.. I know a couple people that do this...

That sucks, Being that if someone on a bike who is riding in the opposite direction of traffic on a sidewalk can hit a car and the driver be held responsible even though they were stopped according to the spokane courts is a fineable offense "failure to yield to a pedestrian". I would guess this driver got a ticket or will get one.

I hope he’s okay. As a cyclist I know that riding on the streets at any time of day can be hazardous, and much more at night and in foul weather. The story did not give all the details. How visible was the rider? With all the sophisticated lighting and reflectors available today, there’s no reason for a cyclists to be “invisible”. But unfortunately we’re still at the mercy of the drivers attention, skill, and level of vision. Please be careful out there folks.

This was clearly the driver's fault! Why was he texting at this time of morning when he should have been intently focused on the road??? Why was he driving around in the dark with his lights off??? And why should anyone with prescription glasses be allowed to drive in the fog at all??? This driver is a menace to society. Get him off the road! Yeah, I know, this is an idiotic argument full of false assumptions, but no more so than all you guys who jump to your ridiculous conclusions about why the cyclist is at fault.

norml, a person on a bike is not a pedestrian, they must obey all the rules of the road just as they are opperating a motor vehical.

Pat s...what the heck are you talking about? Wow...your assumptions are a bit out there. Who said anything about texting or glasses or driving around with lights off? If you intended to get a rise out of those reading this & incite some argument, you win. Your post is downright ridiculous.

Pat S. You forgot to mention that the driver was making breakfast and knitting a scarf while driving the car.
