COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- A man used a knife to threaten officers once they confronted him about setting fire to a construction trailer, according to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department.

It started around 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of North Kootenai Health Way near Kootenai Medical Center.

Coeur d’Alene and Kootenai County firefighters arrived to find a trailer engulfed in flames. They quickly contained the fire, but not before flames damaged a second trailer.

A woman living nearby told police she saw a man acting suspiciously near the trailers shortly before the fire started. As she spoke to investigators, she noticed the man standing next to the firefighters watching as the trailers burned.

Officers immediately began to question Clark E. Richman, 43.

Richman admitted to setting the fire to KREM 2 News, saying he wanted to send a message.

“I did [start the fire]. I figured I need to get some attention. I walked around the hospital. I call it the ‘Chamber of Death,’” he said.

Richman claims the hospital near the construction site is full of satanic symbols.

Police say he became combative and pulled out a 3 inch knife from his pocket. Richman eventually complied with officers after repeated attempts to drop the knife and surrender. He allegedly kicked an officer in the knee as they escorted him to the patrol car.

The suspect is charged with second-degree arson, aggravated assault and battery on a police officer.

Richman says he does not regret anything.
