CHENEY, Wash. -- Eastern Washington University sent out a text alert to students about a sighting of a wanted sex offender.

Officials in Colorado said Eric Hartwell walked away from a Community Corrections facility called Independence House on Friday evening.

The Colorado Department of Corrections requested a warrant 22 minutes after Mr. Hartwell apparently removed his ankle monitor and absconded.

51-year-old Hartwell is described as six-foot-two inches tall with blonde or strawberry-blonde hair. He has blue eyes and weighs about 210 pounds.

According to the State's sex offender registry, Hartwell was convicted of attempted indecent liberties in 1996 and rape of a child in 1991.

In an article from August 2009, Seattle affiliate King reported Hartwell had escaped custody in Snohomish County by removing his GPS monitor just 12 days after being released from prison.

KING reported Hartwell was staying at a home for sex offenders when he escaped. Washington authorities feared he would flee out of state.

KING reported Hartwell's arrest on Sept. 21 in Carrolton, Texas.

EWU Campus Police believe Hartwell was seen on campus.
