SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police arrested an eight-time convicted felon in the Audubon Park area Monday.

Officers responded to several reports of a suspicious person in the area of 3300 W. Kiernan Ave.

“He was coming down the street like he had a little too much to drink or maybe on drugs," said neighbor Michael Emde.

Neighbors called in saying they saw a man with a t-shirt wrapped around his head approach and enter several yards of vacant and ‘for sale’ residences in the area.

"No shirt on, you know, what did we have yesterday, mid 40s, low 40s, and he had this t-shirt wrapped around his head like a turban," added Emde. “He kind of seemed off, you know, once he started disappearing in the house that was kind of like, set off a red flag."

When police arrived on scene, they observed the male walking in the alley. The male immediately jumped a fence and ran from police. Police located the male hiding in a garage loft in the area of 3700 W. Garland and took the suspect, 33-year-old John Whiteaker, into custody.

Whiteaker was booked for 2nd Degree Burglary and a Department of Corrections Escape warrant.

Whiteaker’s felony convictions include 2nd Degree Trafficking Stolen Property and Possession of Stolen Firearm.

He was scheduled to make a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
