If you were in elementary school any time between 1983 and 2009, chances are you’ve still got those lyrics and the rest of the Reading Rainbow theme song lodged away somewhere in your brain.
The PBS show, whose 26-year run was helmed by host LeVar Burton, may be slated for a comeback. But that mostly depends on you.
Burton and his team launched a Kickstarter campaign Wednesday in the hopes of raising $1 million to accomplish three goals: Get Reading Rainbow on the Internet, develop a version that teachers can use in the classroom and be able to give RR to low-income schools for free.
Burton details his mission on the Kickstarter page:
I believe that every child has a right, and a need, to be literate. We have a responsibility to prepare our children… and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility. And here’s the problem: Right now, 1 out of every 4 children in America will grow up illiterate.
