CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The pool at the Woodbridge Apartments off Albemarle Road in east Charlotte was empty Monday. There were no kids and no water in the pool.
It was an unusual Memorial Day due to a tragedy over the weekend in which a body was discovered at the deep end of the pool.
"I went down, I felt something with my feet and I told my cousin there was something down there. He went to see it and he saw the leg," said Aldrin Mayorga.
The 11-year-old was in the pool along with family members. The water was murky, possibly from chlorine.
"I just saw the kids swimming in the water and the water was like real murky. The pool... like wasn't in condition to be swimming," said a resident who didn't want to be identified.
The condition explains why no one could see the body until they were right up on it.
"My cousin, when he first saw it, he was scared, and then my other two cousins were scared, too," said the 11-year-old.
Police say there doesn't appear to be any sign of foul play, but they will wait for the Medical Examiner's report before determining if the victim accidentally drowned.
Officers have not yet released the victim's name.
