SPOKANE, Wash. -- Ants are in full force across Spokane. It is all because of an early and warm spring according to experts who are worried the ants could cause thousands of dollars in damage by excavating wood around your home.

KREM 2 on Your Side went with a pest control crew who went to a home that had an ant problem.  The ants bit some workers and drew blood.

“It’s been out of control. A lot of carpenter ants this year. These ants are wood destroying organisms. They will infest your house,” said Raymond Vanderlow of Pointe Pest Control.

The crew said the homeowner caught the problem early and was having the crew from Pointe Pest Control take care of the problem before it turned into a $2,000 fix.

Experts said last year’s hot temperatures created prime conditions for the pests to lay more eggs and bring them out in full force this spring.

“The best thing a homeowner can do to eliminate ants is make sure you have no wood to ground contact,” said Vanderlow.

Experts also said to make sure your sprinkler is not hitting your home because the water damages wood and it makes it easier for the ants to get in.
